Don't get me wrong. People in Tennessee still revere her and are proud of her. When she picks political fights, rednecks aren't going to take her side.
Dolly Parton is different. She conquered Nashville and then Hollywood. She never once forgot about her roots and has nurtured this region more than anyone could possibly understand.
My freshman year of college, I went to an expensive private school about 30 minutes away from Dollywood. I knew at least eight students who had their full tuitions paid by Dolly Parton. She had a deal with students who went to her high school alma mater. And that in 1988.
When the fires hit the moutains here in 2016, they wiped out a tourist year the same way the pandemic has. And a bunch of people were without homes. Dolly Parton gave 900 different families $10,000 each. She's revered here, but it's not a star-fucking situation. She's earned that devotion.
The two people on this planet I'm sure deserve canonization are Jose Andres and Dolly Parton.
Something I will say is that Taylor Swift is only 30 years old. She's trending the right way. A few years ago, she seemed to be at a crossroads about financial repercussions vs. having a voice. She chose right in a manner that belied her age. I know little about her music, but I very much like her as a person.
