Definitely an extreme case of the movie being better than the book

We read it for university post WWII fiction class. The young Don Corleone parts are a statement on immigrants needing to go somewhere other than the official channels for basic safety and financial services because banks and police are no good to them. The movie does that effectively in the first scene through dialogue only.
