81 games in a season only gives you 5 or so games against each team in your league. That's just not enough games.

A quick look at it makes me think 128 is the minimum and they would need to add a team to each league to balance them out. 15 teams in a league is problematic. And that would also mean dropping interleague play. If you keep interleague you either have to add more games or have teams playing others in their league less.
Going to less than 128 doesn't seem possible and then there's the whole issue with teams losing a ton of money from having less games. I really don't see MLB cutting games simply because it won't make sense financially above all other factors
