People seem to get hung up on being a direct cause vs an indirect cause of something as a moral question -- (edited)

I.e. voting for someone who wants to ban abortion, even though their other actions lead to society having more abortions for other reasons (poverty, crime, etc), versus voting for the person who while they allow for abortion to occur, work to reduce it through other means. It's a version of the slippery slope fallacy, or letting the perfect be the enemy of the good.
