You don't need to do that but it seems that some people are trying to avoid any issue where the ballot isn't counted because it lacks

a postmark.

Here we had some issues where ballots weren't routed to the office where they're all marked or some were stuck together and weren't marked. Obviously that's an issue as the ballots are not counted if there isn't a postmark before a certain date.
It went to a judge who decided that every ballot that was received by a certain date should be counted, even if it was missing a postmark.
To try and avoid that I can see people using stamps to make sure their ballot is counted
