I think it’s the same process as any other federal position. Appoint someone else to fill out the term.

It would be an 18 year term, they're just staggered so a new justice is appointed every 2 years as one rolls off. -- nm

Solution to that is justices would still sit on the court as justice emeritus, but any case is heard by only the nine most junior members. Also works for recusals. -- (edited)
