The writer died -- by a heart attack, no less -- without ever really revealing his intent.
Having read it countless times, I would argue that there are several instances that indicate multiple replayers on the board.
The implication is that no matter how much the characters hope/want to change the future, it remains unwritten. Actions determine outcomes, as nothing will happen for sure. It's the JFK assassination subplot.
