I've heard that many times in many situations with other businessman/politicians as well. These people define the "success" of the country solely by

the stock market and typically a belief in conservative spending/budget deficit considerations (no matter that the evidence doesn't support their party caring about that). It really makes no sense. A government's role is not one of simple profit and loss. You're responsible not just to the "shareholders" but the employees, the consumers, the community, etc. And not just in the lip service ways that companies like to claim they are. That's the entirety of the job. Profit and loss is not measured in dollars. I find those discussions really frustrating.
