The Mercury 13 as they would later be dubbed. They not only performed better, they were in some ways physically better suited for space flight -- (edited)

For those early missions where every ounce counts, it was an advantage to be physically smaller as well as their oxygen consumption rates were generally lower.
Criteria such as their lack of high speed flight experience was used to disqualify them but ummm...the only high speed aircraft are military and test planes and y'all already saw to it that women couldn't fly those so yeah, that was a fair criteria. /s
