i do understand why studios keep pumping out sequels but not because they are sure or guaranteed box office gold

just that they are more likely to be a hit, in the studio's mind, than something that doesn't have a built-in audience.
because studios are ruled by fear and having to perform as divisions of their larger multinational corporate parents
