That's the difference this election vs 2016. Polling right now matters because people are currently voting in large numbers.

Polling shows that a decent percentage of voters lean towards Biden now vs. where they were 2 or 3 weeks ago. That swing could mean millions more votes (than would have been with the swing) for Biden before election day even starts.
