He was an algebra prof from India I had in graduate school and that's how he spelled "neighbourhood", a word which arose a lot in the course. He also spoke and taught very quickly so you were always writing down everything without further thought, so I ended up spelling it that way too in my notes. I've been unable to fully escape the mind meld ever since.
