DYK: The extended fight over the 1800 election was caused by a tie not between Jefferson and Adams, but between Jefferson and his running mate Burr.

At the time, each elector cast 2 EV with no distinction between Pres and VP. The plan was for one of the electors to cast one of his votes for Jefferson and the other for some rando, making Jefferson the winner and Burr, the second place finisher, the VP. The party did not execute. Result: 73-73 tie at the top and the election got kicked to the House, where it was eventually settled after 36 ballots.
