In response to "pirr rules: for how long in the history of the US has the office of vice president been vacant? -- nm" by crash davis

37 years and 290 days. Prior to the 25th Amendment (1967) it remained vacant until the next election if a vacancy occurred.

Will was on the right track, but three other things happened in addition to presidential death

Two vice-presidents resigned

One president resigned

And seven vice-presidents died in office

George Clinton (served under James Madison 1st term)

Elbridge Gerry (served under James Madison 2nd term)

William Rufus De Vane King (served under Franklin Pierce)

Henry Wilson (served under U.S. Grant 2nd term)

Thomas Hendricks (served under Grover Cleveland 2nd term)

Garret Hobart (served under William McKinley 1st term obviously)

James Sherman (served under William Howard Taft)
