Allow me to elaborate (and this time, there are definitely spoilers)

Chewbacca was there at (almost) the very beginning, and has been there since the bitter end.

He was Yoda's trusted lieutenant all the way through the Battle of Kashyyk through the Order 66 debacle and then some. He was there when Yoda banished himself to Dagobah.

He was there with Han Solo almost from the beginning of Solo's involvement and the emergence of the Millenium Falcon.

Essentially, Chewie has bee present -- and closely involved -- in all the events from Episode II through the Clone Wars and The New Rebellion all the way up through Episode IX.

And in terms of canon, he is still alive, and one of the few characters from the first two trilogies still living to see future events unfold.
