They do need to do this, but the activists need to be more sensitive to the messaging and less demanding about defending it. They are hurting their

cause when their own party has to run for office against them. Part of the problem is that there are leaders who really do mean abolish the police (yes they mean replace it with something else, but that's too complicated). If they simply ran on "Reform the Police", nobody would disagree with that. Then the discussion would be about how, not having to try to convince people that "Defund" doesn't mean eliminate. It's pointless digging in.
