Hee, I know them from when they *were* GPS, back in the mid-90s. I think I still have a brick-like hand held somewhere.

We used them back in my early field school days when they had a accuracy of a few meters. Our instructor lusted after one that had an accuracy of less than a meter but cost over $1,000.
