I should note that avoiding other brands removes incentive for legacy makers to embrace EVs, but they're in a tough position. -- (edited)

Tesla started small and focused on expanding as they grew.
Legacy builders are huge. They could conceivably produce 100,000 cars a year starting tomorrow, but would also have to have a network to support that many cars spread through their markets. That's not a small investment.
They slept while Tesla worked to make EVs usable for the vast majority of drivers.
Tesla has offered to open up their charging network to others, no takers, but I also don't know what terms looked like.
