Realistically, there was never a happy ever after for her and it's not just because she's a woman in a book about a man.
She's a human in a book where tens of humans die in every adventure. A pistol vs a shapeshifter isn't a fight the human wins more than once. She was always going to die; but we assumed it was going to be a massive attack or something magical.
That it was a human doing the killing; that it was so random made it better in my mind. War is random, war is hell; the baddest mother fuckers alive don't always die on a ridgeline facing down the enemy. Sometimes, they're driving by a buried IED. It's war; and it's brutally random.
