West Wing just confused me greatly. They have a character who is a real person but being played by someone else.

Lawrence Lessig (the character) is in this episode played by Christopher Lloyd. He is helping the Belarussians write a Constitution much as the real life Lawrence Lessig did for the republic of Georgia.
In a show filled with fake people in various positions, why use a real person in this case -- and have him played by someone else -- and break my brain like that?
