Same with Yo-Yo Ma and Penn & Teller, too, though they personally appeared.

And a few other folks I think appeared as themselves. I'm forgetting someone I know, but can't rack my brain.
The West Wing podcast touched on this. If I recall correctly, they had these "real life" crossover events with some people, but not everyone, to create a sort of blended realism for the show. It's a fictional universe, but some real life parts are interjected to keep people interested.
And I think Josh Malina said something about Aaron Sorkin and Thomas Schlamme wanting to feature people they liked and admired.
