Sure - if I'm an employee.

When I've been a hiring manager, I hated doing reference checks. I considered them a waste of time.
Of course the candidate is going to list people with glowing recommendations.
But even if I got an honest, straightforward answer, I still found the information useless because there was a completely different job involved, or a completely different company and culture.
