I'm sure the idea is to entice people to come see something at the theater instead of at home the same day. Hey come watch WonderWoman at the theater -- (edited)

for $3 a ticket!
We make our money on snacks anyway. 80-90% of ticket sale goes to the studio.
Or at least I assume that's what someone's bright idea was. Not saying I agree, but that's probably a little bit of the thought process.
