It's all in the public domain in the UK but US has different length of copyright.

They also sued us over Mr Holmes on supposed character developments in the final books (he's retired in both). I figure they thought they would get a massive payday from the BBC, where in fact the budget was tiny and we weren't the producers (just financiers) of the film so they were suing the wrong party.
