Worthwhile Canadian Music Initiative - 2002 -- (edited)

2002: Indie Rock Pokes Its Head Out

A bit of an off year, but with a desert island record in the mix, from Broken Social Scene with their debut: You Forgot It In People. A collective of Toronto musicians that come and go as they please, they managed to create a cohesive whole with an epic sound that virtually defined the decade for Canadian music. The every-other-year Tragically Hip record makes an appearance, and New Pornographers have one of their poppier records. Arcade Fire's EP wasn't what they could eventually be, though No Cars Go is an entry in their pantheon. Hot Hot Heat debuted, with dance rock making a comeback. Danko Jones makes for some *filthy dirty* rock, with Swollen Members having another solid record. k-os made his debut in the hip hop world but had greater heights to hit.
