Heading into the national tournaments next week, ST teams continue to upswing now 3 cycles in.
Starkville Cephalopods (12-6, #85) are heading to their first NTT, having won the Conf. 11 tournament to secure their bid. They are rewarded with a 16-seed and a date with the #3 school in the country. This game will undoubtedly put us in our place but it will be fun to dream Cinderella dreams. Already ranked where we landed after last season, three wins in the loser's bracket should set a new high water mark in ranking and record (15-9) by season's end. Starkville is holding opponents to <40% shooting.
Hartford (10-8, #87) took another step forward from last year's 11-13 #102 ranked team, and makes a third consecutive appearance in the #2 tournament, this year as a 6-seed (last year: 10-seed). 4th in THE toughest conference in the league they are in the midst of a 5-game losing streak. It says alot that they are in the position they're in after 5 losses. Graduating a 156/143 batch of seniors, next year should have their sights set on the top-50.
Buffalo Piranha (11-7 #114) are well ahead of last cycle's 12-12/#145 team, and enter the 2nd tier tourney for the first time, as a 13-seed. They could crack the top-100 this year but with graduating seniors at 168/163 the top-100 will soon enough become the floor.
Charleston Ramblin Wreck (5-13 #219) took a step back compared to last season (11-13 #191), having whiffed a bit on their recruiting. They're a 7-seed in the 4th tier tourney and will continue the long rebuild.
