They use him brilliantly. (spoilers)

In his first appearance, he threatens the star with his casual greatness.
In his second-to-last appearance, Roy's miserably soaking in a cold tub after an own goal that eventually relegated them. The worst thing that could have happened in that moment was a jubilant guy entering the room and turning on the lights to work out. It's VERY well done.
Plus, "your defense is death!"
