I knew a guy who ran for state office in Oregon as a Republican. We worked on a city planning board together, where he was the chair. He was a sensible, measured, and reasonable man back then. But when he ran for state office, in order to be considered viable for Republicans, he had to take all their extreme positions. It's sad to see this happen to anyone.
