My guess is it was a few things - First, it made it more intriguing and took them further down the rabbit hole. Second, it made them feel special

that they were figuring this out while the rest of the world was oblivious. Third, it helped explain why it wasn't being revealed sooner. The conspiracy just grows to explain why it isn't proving out. And finally, after all the gaslighting, and inability to distinguish between what is real and what is not, it's what they were told to believe. And to remain a part of this group that they had become their core social framework, they had to go along with it.
