The social network said it reached the decision to remove Trump's account after a "close review" of his recent tweets.
Twitter has permanently suspended President Donald Trump's account "due to the risk of further incitement of violence," the social media giant announced Friday afternoon.
The decision comes two days after Trump urged his supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol building.
Twitter previously suspended Trump's account for a few hours, calling on him to delete tweets that contained misinformation and incited violence before it would allow him to tweet again. It reactivated his account on Thursday. But the company said that "close review" of two tweets sent earlier today led to its decision to permanently ban his account.
Trump wrote in one tweet, “The 75,000,000 great American Patriots who voted for me, AMERICA FIRST, and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, will have a GIANT VOICE long into the future. They will not be disrespected or treated unfairly in any way, shape or form!!!” In another, he said we would not be attending Joe Biden's Jan. 20 inauguration.
Twitter said those tweets "must be read in the context of broader events in the country and the ways in which the President's statements can be mobilized by different audiences, including to incite violence, as well as in the context of the pattern of behavior from this account in recent weeks."
Twitter decision follows a similar move by Facebook to block Trump from using his Facebook and Instagram accounts indefinitely for at least the final two weeks of his presidency.
