In response to "Murkowski is almost certainly a yes but I honestly think it’s going to be tough getting to 67. " by spamlet

Here's my thought. There's little to no downside to conviction here. They're not undermining the rest of their term in office (it's days at most,

they got what they could). It gives them bona fides to argue that they do have lines that can't be crossed (absurd that it's actual insurrection where they draw the line, but whatever). They can claim that they put the country ahead of party (when it costs them next to nothing). It helps them sort of clear the record from their previous allegiance. Now the downside is losing the Trump supporters, but I think what's happening now is that lines are being drawn. Most of these senators used it for what it's worth, but now they have to pick one side or the other. His biggest supporters will be all in, but the people who were more silently complicit have an off ramp. I think they take it. Toomey's warning is basically don't make the charges about the entire party. Focus solely on his actions and he'll go along. If you use it to attack the party as a whole and all who enabled, then you're not allowing them to use this to try to save face. I think you can find 20 of them that want the off ramp. I think even McConnell might take it.
