I think critical thinking can help, but it is a process of brainwashing. Breaking down belief systems by flooding it with confusing inconsistencies.

Separating them from their other attachments and then making them believe that the only people who care about them are cult leaders/members and that you can't trust anything but the cult leaders because everyone else is just lying to them and taking advantage of them. The insular right wing media and social media have effectively learned to do this and it's literally changing people. I don't think any of them deserve a pass for their actions, but I do feel that many of them have lost their sense of reality and are being used. I feel for those people. It's very difficult to get someone out of a cult.
