The way I look at it is that it's the downside of enhanced social connections the Internet, smart phones, and other technologies have provided.

In a lot of ways, life is a whole lot easier for weirdoes, castaways, and anyone in any sort of minority group. If you're some gay kid growing up in the Midwest these days, you've got a whole network of other gay kids to access through TikTok, Snapchat, Tumblr, etc. And even if you're closeted away from your family, you can probably find a cheap smart phone to keep to yourself.
When we were growing up, the only way to access any information about what it was like being gay was that very small collection of maybe a dozen books at the library -- if your library even had it. And there was no way you'd go there anyway for fear of being seen.
But the same applies to those other maladjusted kids to young adults who want to believe that their lives and what they care about are justified for other reasons. Why am I growing up in a shitty community watching my family struggle financially so much? Obviously it's the Democrats. Or if I'm listening to Alex Jones, it's an insidious cabal of lizard-people.
