Theresa isn't getting any stimulus because she made $1,035 over the cut off in 2019. :-/

She's pissed.
She didn't make that much in 2020 but they're still using 2019 numbers and that is screwing a lot of people that lost income in the last year.
I'm hoping I can get her taxes done before the next round of stimulus so she can get it next time.
Responses:
So far, we've received a grand total of $117 from both stimulus packages. nm

While that sucks that she didn’t get an advance check, if she made less in 2020 she should still be able to qualify for at least a partial credit

Good to know, thanks! As she owes taxes from previous years I assume they're just going to keep it.

Yeah, it’ll wash out one way or another. Sorry you didn’t get to spend it though! :) -- nm

So this isn't them fronting us money that we owe later, right? Also, we are desperate for a new mattress so that was where it was going.

Overall, it represents a reduction in your total tax liability for 2020, whether it got paid out in advance or is claimed as a credit on your return. -- nm

Do I owe them this money? Will I get hurt on my next taxes in some way? ELI5, please. If you can. :-) -- (edited)

No. They’re not giving people money just so they can take it back. A reduction in tax liability is a net gain to you. -- nm

She’ll get it when she files her 2020 return. It’s not lost, just delayed. -- nm

The only reason I know how it works is I inadvertently tried to claim it as a credit in 2003, I think, after already having gotten my check.

She kept checking the site but it had no info. I went and checked her taxes and saw it was just over the cut off.

I get that using the on-file data is easier, but it doesn't catch/help people who lost their jobs or had reduced incomes

True but we really want money in people's hands today. So many need cash money to buy food, medicine, pay bills, etc. I know you know this but there

It’s not a perfect system, sure, but it probably the best we have to help the most people the most quickly. -- (edited)
