It's not all that bad, the boardwalk at Ocean City is fun, but that's at the southern end of the state.

Boston is a very walkable and transit-friendly city. I never had a car in the 6 years I was there. Day-trips are totally doable if you catch an early bus, and it's only $15 each way from Chinatown.
