As a kid, I loved watching S&E, but I would not care about a lot of their recs because they were too "grown up" for me at the time. Flash to 2021.
I had a bit of a white whale film I was after and I'm happy to say I think I found it in the form of A Perfect Murder (1998 Douglas, Paltrow, HBO Max). Let me explain. My white whale was 1) from the foggy depths of my movie watching memory. 2) great cinematography in a dialogue film that doesn't really need it. 3) Manhattan setting. 4) Starred Michael Douglas. That's the reason I watched APM first. Maybe next I'll rewatch Wall Street just to be sure. ;)
I loved A Perfect Murder. I guess it's a remake of Hitchcock, who I was never much of a fan of. And it's full of great camerawork for a dialogue picture.
House of Games (1987, Mamet, Mantegna, Pluto TV). It's funny, it has a nice poker sequence in the beginning and I admit the twists got me. Lindsay Crouse lacked charisma for me.
True Confessions (1981 De Niro, Duvall, Hulu). Hoo boy, what a gem! Multilayered crime drama with Duvall in an explosive performance and De Niro like I've never seen him before as an up and coming Catholic monsignor. This actually has nothing to do with S&E, but I really wanted to mention it.
The Witches of Eastwick (George Miller director! HBO Max). Once again, this looks immaculate for a dialogue film. There are sexual themes that I have no idea how they would date today. *shrug*
Shallow Grave (1994 Danny Boyle). Very entertaining. Thanks again for the rec STers!
Down and Out In Beverly Hills (HBO Max). S&E fans know they mention this movie a lot. It's genuinely funny, but requires you to buy into the sensibilities and values of each character. Once you understand those, you're in for a ton of laughs.
48 Hours (Nolte, Murphy, Starz). Man, this did not age well! Nolte plays an aggressively racist cop. In the 80s, we were expected to enjoy watching this on the screen or something. We don't anymore. Still, I suppose it fills my other criteria just fine.
Mimic (Sorvino, Guillermo del Toro, Pluto TV). Still in progress, I've been playing this repeatedly as trashy On In The Background viewing. It was actually critically hailed when it came out, it just has missed my radar until now. Review forthcoming!
