I think yes. The overwhelming number of choices to nominate may not push voters, but when they suddenly see the list of 5 I bet many regret it.

Or they didn't vote at first because they hadn't seen them, but they then go see the nominees after the announcement. -- nm

Sure it could have. People who felt these were better films than the nominees could now vote for them, instead of an also-ran.
