Kevin Costner played a serial killer, but I think all three of these were playing their personas just on the opposite side of the plot

I don't think Cruise's intensity in Collateral is much different from his performance in Top Gun or M:I - he's just portraying more confidence at being intense. Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder would be against type.
