Q: Is there any reason why any R senator who wants Trump convicted, but is too chicken to vote against him wouldn't just fail to show for the vote?

Pragmatically, no. But the R's who've publicly declared opposition to Trump are likely going to vote against him anyway. As for the silent ones ...

They'd take the same heat in their primary. It would be seen as a failure to defend Trump, the same as a conviction vote. -- nm*

Yes. I believe if 16 (or so) of the R's just don't show up for the vote, they can get a conviction.
