In response to "Q: Is there any reason why any R senator who wants Trump convicted, but is too chicken to vote against him wouldn't just fail to show for the vote?" by ralph wiggum

Pragmatically, no. But the R's who've publicly declared opposition to Trump are likely going to vote against him anyway. As for the silent ones ...

The Congressional Members who have privately and secretly leaked that they criticize or oppose Trump, but who have failed to make similar public statements ... well, they are in a different pickle entirely.

They are probably depending on a pro-Trump voter base for reelection 2 or 4 years from now.

If they vote "yes," to impeach him, they lose that base immediately.

If they abstain or fail to show up, they risk losing that base in the future, which is a gamble worth taking. The vast majority of folks are going to forget all about this mess 2 or 4 years from now anyway, and they can use the time to retcon their own complicity.
