In response to "what do they call the machine that carves, sculpts something out of a block that is computer driven, I see custom car builders use it..." by zeitgeist

The reason I asked was I was trying to describe the machine my dentist used to make my crown while I waited, he called it a 3d printer but its not.

but it was cool. instead of putting a temp wad of putty and hoping it doesn't fall apart before the crown is made someplace else, hoping it fits right (a previous one didn't and no amount of grinding and burnishing could fix it)

used to be they'd put a temp in that would last, looked ugly but lasted...to well, some folks wouldn't come back till a year later when it finally wore away and caused a worse problem like a root canal.

so they started using a more fragile temp and gave you a mold to return with if you broke it.
