So if I want to use my AA airmiles to fly to Portland I have to go by way of Phoenix, San Francisco, or Seattle. :/

Or fly direct with Alaska for $300 round trip.

I’m afraid you misunderstood, ma’am. Phoenix, San Francisco, *AND* Seattle. -- nm

I think you can get non-stop from LAX? Though of course you probably don't want to go to LAX.

I can use them for Alaska, but not for the direct flights. The SFO flights are Alaska. And no, after the last trip I wouldn't go near LAX. -- nm
