This is today's excerpt from the Braves beat writer:
"But before everyone outside Atlanta and Braves Nation bestows the best-hitting catcher label on Mauer over McCann, consider that McCann has a .300 career average with more homers (77) and almost as many doubles (134) and RBI (325) in 525 games than Mauer (58 homers, 139 doubles, 343 RBI) has in 608 games.
And remember, Mauer has the advantages of indoor, air-conditioned home ballpark and the DH option to get a rest now and then (he has 63 career games as DH).
Mauer has significant edges in career average (.323) and OBP (.404 to McCanns .364), while McCann has a .504 career slugging percentage to Mauers .477.
So lets wait a while and see what happens, see if both hold up and stay behind the plate for years to come, etc.
By the way, itll be interesting to see if McCanns surge since his return from the DL will be enough to land him his fourth consecutive All-Star appearance.
Its been extremely impressive to see what hes done since getting the glasses and making that switch in the middle of a season, after never playing in glasses previously.
After hitting .195 with five-extra-base hits in 13 games before he went on the DL for his vision problem, McCann has hit .368 with a .444 OBP, .571 slugging percentage and 23 RBI in 39 games since he came off the DL on May 8.
Hes hit .371 with 13 extra-base hits (four homers) and 17 RBI in his past 26 games, including last nights three-hit, two-RBI game with a double and homer."
