Lately with relatives I've really been appreciating the value of tone. You can rip people a new one and still leave them feeling good with the right -- (edited)

And note, yes you do want to leave everyone feeling good, even if you hate them and you think they don't deserve it (and it sounds like you wish to influence your mom here). The simple reason for that is it leaves them more willing to be influenced when you avoid stress (stress gives people a reason to resist what you're trying to say).
