Ah, guess I only know of them from flights I took to KC years ago. Now I go AA through DFW or PHX, and ORD if I absolutely have to. -- nm

Looking at SNA-MCI on UA, many itineraries would try to route you through DEN, but there are ORD and IAH options as well. -- (edited)

My preferred flight to MCI is AA through PHX or DFW. Otherwise Southwest through LAS or PHX. -- nm

I know you have no desire to go to LAX, but apparently Delta and Southwest run non-stop from there to MCI

UA gained the Houston and Newark hubs (and Cleveland which I think they de-hubbed) from the merger with Continental.
