Orbital mechanics are non-intuitive and I'm pretty sure that there's more to it than the door is down for trying to simply throw an object

I'm horrible at Kerbal Space Program. It is *very* complicated (orbital mechanics). I get a little better each time I play but overall I suck at it -- nm

Angle of entry is important. Throwing it directly at Earth would result in a large chunk surviving reentry

Too shallow an angle of entry and it could, indeed, skip right off the atmosphere and back into a dangerous orbit.
