Orbital mechanics are non-intuitive and I'm pretty sure that there's more to it than the door is down for trying to simply throw an object

The one that has always been tough for me to wrap my ahead around is the trying to get two spacecraft to meet up.
In the bigger picture of things, the trailing spacecraft can't simply apply thrust and try to speed up as the resulting orbital change will take the spacecraft to a higher orbit and the result of that orbit is that the velocity of the spacecraft relative to the Earth will actually be less.
