I was also curious about this. Apparently, before 1978 you actually had to affix a copyright notice to the work for it to count. -- (edited)

If wikipedia is to be believed, they forgot to include the word "copyright".
Now copyright is implicit in any creative work, to my understanding, but you still need to register it in order to be able to enforce it in court.
