In discussing the magnitude (media-wise) of MJ's death, I don't think you can underestimate the incredibly odd life he led and the negatives of his

life as much as the positives. It is much more than the death of an iconic performer, which is why I don't think the death of McCartney or Springsteen would be the equal in terms of coverage and fascination. It's the flaws, the oddities. His life became so complex and weird that his death becomes like another chapter in the weird story. I think the only real comparisons are Elvis, Marilyn Monroe and maybe Diana. It's greater than recognizing the impact of his career on music and entertainment. His life was fairly incomprehensible to begin with and the finality of death finally finishes the story so that you can focus on the whole of the crazy life (ups, downs, impact, etc.) all at once. There are few that have that unbelievable complexity on top of talent and impact.
