Gave it some thought and here’s what I came up with so far, and I’m okay with it.

There are two use cases for they/them, it can either be affirming for trans/non-binary people who choose it, and neutral for cisgender people. Defaulting to the neutral use case should not be construed as a disaffirming usage, I.e. misgendering, and I’m guessing it was implemented to avoid the possibility of the latter for students who may not be out as trans or non-binary and have an unexpressed preference, and it consciously affirms those that have. So it sounds like overall a net plus.
